Career Education is a comprehensive, lifelong
educational process, which encourages and empowers
ALL individuals at ALL levels of their development
to make appropriate personal applications of learning
to prepare for and achieve a satisfying career
and lifestyle. In high school,
career education includes many activities, experiences,
and opportunities that will assist students to
reach the goals of career education:
- Make learning more relevant to students.
- Instill the desire to be lifelong learners.
- Assist students to set post secondary educational
and career goals.
As freshmen, 9th grade students complete a 4
year plan to assist them in establishing
long-range goals and developing a plan to meet
these goals. Students also complete a career exploration
unit using the CHOICES/BRIDGES
web-based assessment that includes an interest
and skills inventory and college search. Based
on the inventory, consultation with parents/guardians,
and counselors, students in the Elk Grove Unified
School District can begin their career preparation
via academies, majors, career
paths or Regional Occupational Programs (ROP).
What is an Academy?
EGUSD academies are 3 or 4 year programs to which
students must apply. The academy curriculum integrates
academic and career/technical education. While
providing students with a solid background for
a college major. academy programs incorporate
business partnerships to provide opportunities
for students to learn about and experience work
while in school. Students who complete an academy
program have completed all district graduation
requirements and are prepared to attend college
and/or enter the work world.
What
is a Career Path or Major?
A career path or major
is a series of specialized courses concentrated
in a particular career or academic area. Students
are provided with the introductory skills and
knowledge necessary to pursue post-secondary education
or work immediately after graduation from high
school.
Academies, majors and career
paths in the Elk Grove Unified School District
include courses in these specific career fields:
agriculture, athletics, business, communication
and media, consumer and family, engineering, health,
industrial technology, information technology,
and visual and performing arts.
What
is ROP?
The Regional Opportunity Program is a tuition-
free career preparation program for high school
students, 16 years or older, operated by the Sacramento
County Office of Education. Most ROP programs
include initial classroom instruction followed
by four days at a training
site and one day classroom instruction. Classes
are one or two semesters in length and are usually
two or three hours daily.
Listed below are some of
career paths at each of the EGUSD high schools.
