It’s time to break out the new backpacks and stock up on binders, paper, pens and pencils.  Twenty-eight EGUSD year-round elementary schools started a new school year on Monday, July 20.

“The first day of school is always one of the most exciting days of the year,” said Fawzia Keval, principal at Prairie Elementary School. “The thrill of starting a new grade, the anticipation of seeing their friends and wonder of meeting their new teacher makes the first day of school an important milestone in every student’s school year.”

On Monday morning, students arrived at school with freshly scrubbed faces and smiles of delight as they greeted old friends and new teachers. Tracks B, C, and D returned.  Students on A Track and on traditional schedules go back to school on Monday, August 17.  Ellen Feickert, Florin and Florence Markofer elementary schools moved to a traditional calendar this year and will begin on August 17.

This year brings new breakfast programs to two new schools – Stone Lake Elementary School and Ellen Feickert Elementary School.  A total of 37 elementary schools and all middle and high schools offer breakfast programs for students. The cost for elementary school students is $1.25 and $1.50 for secondary school students.  Families who qualify for free and reduced lunch also qualify for breakfast at no cost.

“Providing breakfast for our students is integral to providing them with an excellent educational program, but this year we are also introducing W.I.N. Time, a new program that will help teachers in assisting their students in the areas where they need extra attention,” said Toni Westermann, principal at Arlene Hein Elementary School.

For 30 minutes each day – 15 minutes for kindergarteners – students in grades first through sixth will have a chance to focus on areas where they need greater assistance during “What I Need” Time (W.I.N. Time).

“The beauty of W.I.N. Time is that each child will have a chance to enhance their education in the way that best suits them,” said Linda Meyerson, director of elementary education for the district.  “If a student is a GATE student, they will have the opportunity to take on accelerated curriculum.  English Language Learner students will work on language development and vocabulary.  Other students might have the chance to work on vocabulary development or comprehension skills, among other things.  W.I.N. Time will give teachers a specified time to tailor the educational experience for each student.”

With the start of the new year, parents are encouraged to update all emergency contact information with their child’s school(s). Also, parents are encouraged to ensure that their designated emergency contacts are aware of their emergency contact status.
