OBJECTIVE:  Create a short film of three to five minutes.  

 

This film could be entered in the Teen Digital Reel, the Sacramento International Film Festival, the Sacramento County Fair, and the California State Fair, and California Media Festival and possibly other festivals and venues.   

 

A limited number of cameras are available for student use after-school. If you wish to use a school-owned camera, please discuss this with your teacher in advance.  Students will need to get their parents to accept the liability of any loss or damage that may occur to the camera.  Download the Parent Permission form here.

Concept (10 points)

After brainstorming ideas with your group, develop it further in a concept proposal.  Select a typist and then determine the roles for your group. ON a Microsoft Word documents, submit the following information.

 

  1. The names of the members of your group, listed in the upper right hand corner. The last names of each member should be in the file name. 
  2. The proposed title of your project. 
  3. The name of the producer (responsible for all paperwork
  4. The name of the director
  5. The name of the actor or actors
  6. A synopsis of your story or idea. 
  7. The location or locations you plan on using.
  8. List any props you will need. 
  9. The contest and category you plan on entering your project in. 

 

 

Story Outline (20 points)

Use the 3-Act story outline used by the writers of Adventure Time. 

 

  1. List the names of your team.
  2. List the title of your film
  3. Who are all the character who appear in this film? 
  4. Describe who the story is about.  Who is the protagonist. What is his name? What does he look like? 
  5. What happens in the protagonist’s life that needs to be resolved?
  6. Describes Plot Point One – What is the protagonist’s goal?
  7. Describe the obstacles the protagonist faces as they try to meet their goal.
  8. Describe how the need is resolved
  9. Estimate how many locations you will have and briefly describe them. 

 

 

Story Boards (25 points)

Creating the storyboards is a group process.  Each member must contribute equally, or they will receive fewer points.  After discussing the shot required, pass the storyboard forms to one member of the group and have them draw them.  Then pass then to the next member and that person will draw the next frame.  Rotate through this one frame at a time, taking turns drawing a single frame.   

 

Shot List (25 Points)

  1. Select one typist for your group.  This person will download to their desktop the Shot List Form (click here)
  2. The typist will change the document name to all list all three last names of the members of the group.  Example: Smith_Lee_Sanchez_shotlist.doc. 
  3. The group will then work together to discuss each required shot.  Students observed not participating fully in this collaborative effort will receive reduced points.   
  4. All members of the group are responsible for the final project. 
  5. The typist will turn in the project to the server.

Production Book (25 points)

The Production Book is required for each project.  Make sure that it is complete and well done.  You are graded on the completeness and professional appearance of the completed book. (NOTE: This book is a required part of the Teen Digital Reel competition.)  The producer is responsible for see that this work is completed.

SCRIPT (25 points total)

1. The story is creative and entertaining. 

  1. The story is primarily visual, with a lot of visual description.
  2. Story follows an arc with a beginning, middle, and end.
  3. Script is in typed in the proper format with the names of all of the three co-writers placed at the top. 
  4. The script should follow standard script format and be saved as a Microsoft Word document The file should have the names of all three contributors along with the number 7.  Place this document on the server in the proper folder.  

 

 

  VIDEO (100 points total)

  1. Performance (30% of total): 

You are graded on your performance as a director or an actor.  The director/camera operator is responsible for the following:

    1. Director/Camera Operator

                                                              i.      Camera composition (follows rule-of-thirds, proper headroom, proper framing).

                                                            ii.      Camera technique (color balance is correct; tripod is set properly.

                                                          iii.      Direction (shots have motion that will match when cut to; actors directed to give appropriate performance; retake scenes if needed).

                                                          iv.      Coverage (shooting enough footage to edit, including a variety of shots (CU, MS, OTS, LS, etc.)

                                                            v.      Creativity in shot selection.

    1. Actor

                                                              i.      Delivery of lines (phrasing appears natural; volume appropriate).

                                                            ii.      Affect (emotional response is appropriate to the character and the situation).

 

 

  1. Editing (60% of total)
    1. Demonstrate competent use of editing software.

                                                              i.      Effective selection of available takes.

                                                            ii.      Appropriate use of cuts and/or transitions.

                                                          iii.      Appropriate use of sound effects if needed for story

                                                          iv.      Music at start and end of video (over credits).

                                                            v.      Pacing moves the story along without sacrificing clarity.

                                                          vi.      The title of the production (you make this up) appears sometime during the beginning of the film.
