Objective:

To create a 60 second Public Service Announcement that is enterable in either the SEVA and/or Teen Digital Reel Contests.

Procedure:

This is an individual project. You will select and topic, develop and idea, write the script, select a cast, direct the actors, operate the camera and edit the finished piece. Unlike the PSAs you created in Video 1, these PSAs must feature all original material (No still photos taken from the internet without the owner’s permission.).

• Look at examples of PSAs and research various issues. Go to The Advertising Council and look at the different issues they have produced spots for. Also look at the work of Media Campaign.org.
• Additional information can be found at psaresearch.org.
• Research and identify one area of public importance that you want to produce a PSA for. See the Ad Council list and the list below. The best PSAs produced this term will air during an Advocacy Broadcast, so your target audience is other teens. The best videos may be eligible for the SEVA video contest.

1. Proposal (10 Points)

Procedure:

Select a typist in your group and use Microsoft Word to create a document with the following information. Name the document with all group members’ names and place it in the appropriate folder on the server. The document must include the following:

• Director:
• Talent (on-screen and voiceovers):
• Topic:
• General concept for PSA:
• Website where teens can get more information or help.
• Possible shooting locations:

2. Script (15 Points)

Procedure:

Use Celtx to format the script. Each member will collaborate on ideas for the structure and dialog in the PSA. Turn in the assignment on the School Loop.

• Script is properly formatted using Celtx.
• Your last name in the file name.
• The script contents are appropriate for the subject matter selected.
• The script is creative in the approached used to convey the information to the target audience.
• Concludes with a website where teens can get more information or help

3. Shot List (15 Points)

1. Select one typist for your group. This person will download to their desktop the Shot List Form (click here)
2. The typist will change the document name to all list all three last names of the members of the group. Example: Smith_Lee_Sanchez_shotlist.doc.
3. The group will then work together to discuss each required shot. Students observed not participating fully in this collaborative effort will receive reduced points.
4. All members of the group are responsible for the final product.
5. The typist will turn in the project on School Loop.

4. Storyboards (20 points)

Procedure:

Storyboard each shot. Do not use stick figures, but draw “thick figures” that fill the frame as intended. Indicate camera or actor movement with dynamic lines. The storyboard will follow the shot list.

Storyboard Grading Criteria:

• The drawings are neatly rendered.
• The drawings have “thick figures,” not “stick figures.”
• Camera and actor movements are indicated with an arrow.

5. Grading Criteria for Video Project:

• Length: 60 seconds followed by 3 seconds and then a 30 second version. This is followed by one second and then white credits on black
• Power and effectiveness of message. Your job is to influence viewers
• Music that individually created in GarageBand and/or Soundtrack.
• Camera shots demonstrate proper composition and framing techniques.
• Audio clarity is apparent in any dialog and narration.
• Audience appropriate (the content and style relate to the target audience)
• Attention getting "hook" - what in your PSA gets your audience’s attention?
• Refer to an agency where teens can get more information or help.
• End Credits listing the names of the actors, director, producer and editor. Also list the names and roles of people who contributed to your PSA.
