The Apprentice

100 Points Possible

Objective: To follow storyboard and apply rotoscoping skills to a short Star Wars fan film.

Instructions: Identify the roles each group member will take: Jedi, Sith, or director/camera operator.  If you are an actor, try to dress for the role.  You may own a martial arts gee.  Dress in black, etc.

Edit your project in iMovie.  Individually copy each shot that needs and effect into its own Project timeline.  Export this single clip out as: Apprentice Shot 1 (or whatever number your are on).

Share > Export using QuickTime.

Then open the application Apple Motion.   Review the Lightsaber Tutorial page as needed and follow the pointers below.

File > Import as Project > (select appropriate .mov fle)

Window > Layers

Window > Timeline

View > Overlays > Dynamic Guides

IMPORTANT NOTE: Place your Playback Head in your Timeline to the frame where the “lighted” light saber makes its first appearance.

Library > Content > White Square.psd.  Push the Apply button to add it to the project.

Stretch the four corners over the entire frame.

Go to Mask button and select Bezier.

Click four points to make a rectangle.  Adjust rectangle to fit over the light saber blade.

Press record button and make adjustments frame-by-frame.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you lose the red outline and get a white box, you need to turn the white square back on in the Layers Menu.  Then do a right-click on the square in the Timeline.  Then select Edit Points from the pop-up menu.

LAST FRAME ELECTRICITY EFFECT

To create the electricity effect you have one of three options:

Library > Particle Emitters > Scifi Plasma Beam

Library > Content > All> Light Layer 09.

Library > Content > All > Lighting.mov

Adjust the effect dimensions in the Viewer so that it fits to the proper size.

Press Record button and make adjustments frame-by-frame, if needed.

Then add a smoke effect at the end of the electricity.

Library > Particle Emitters > Smoke > Rising Smoke

Go to the Inspector Tab > Emitter Tab to adjust parameters so that it looks just right.
