Goal: To produce a 60 second Public Service Announcement (PSA). This is NOT a group project. Each person in class produces their own PSA. The best of these may be considered for airing on the Morning Bulletin and for entry in regional video competitions.  

You can use actors outside of your row group. You are encouraged to shoo this project outside of class with your own friends and relatives.  You must provide your own video camera or digital still camera that shoots video if you want to shoot outside of class.  You may also shoot during

1.     If you missed the lecture introducing this assignment, you can view this PSA PowerPoint Presentation. Look at examples of PSAs and research various issues.  Go to The Advertising Council and look at the different issues they have produced spots for.  Also look at the work of the Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign.

4.     Learn about research on creating Effective Public Service Announcements.

5.     Research and identify one area of public importance that you want to produce a PSA for. See the Ad Council list and the list below.  The best PSAs produced this term will air during an Advocacy Broadcast, so your target audience is other teens.   The best videos may be eligible for the SEVA video contest.

6.     Submit a PSA Proposal as a Microsoft Word Document. This concept proposal should include the issue your PSA will address; the key information you will relate; the “hook” that will grab your audience’s attention.  Also, note whether you plan on shooting video for your project. You PSA Concept is types in Microsoft Word.  Save the document as your LastName_PSAconcept.doc.

Include the following information:

·         Your name, period and date in the upper right hand corner.

·         Topic: (selected from the list below)

·         Media: (video or still images)

·         Actors: (if any)

·         Hook: (what is going to keep you audience from changing the channel?)

·         Description: Describe in detail what will happen during the 60 second PSA.

·         Facts: (what do you want your audience to know about this issue you are presenting. List specific information and statistics you obtained through your research)

·         Resource: List an internet resource that you will refer your audience to.

·         Locations: (if you are shooting video)

7.     Write an A/V Script.  Use this template.  See this example based on the Jelly Sandwich.  Include shot type with a description of what each actor does in the shot.  Write the dialog or sound effects that occur in the shot. Turn this document into SchoolLoop as LastName_PSA_script.doc

8.     Prepare a Storyboard that describes the images required and that includes the text for a voice-over narration. 

9.     Shoot video footage and/or select effective photographs from the Internet. 

10.  Record your narration track with a USB microphone or with  video camera

11.  Edit this material to a length of 60 seconds (acceptable range 55 to 65 seconds).  Include music you create in GarageBand. Do not include your production company logo, but do include credits with your name and period at the end over black.

Extra Credit Topic: Internet Safety: If your work is accepted for entry to this Internet Safety PSA contest, you will earn 10 extra credit points.

Grading Criteria for Video Project:

  1. Length: 60 seconds (Acceptable range 55-65 seconds).
  2. Power and effectiveness of message.  Your job is to influence your viewers.
  3. Music that you created in GarageBand.
  4. Voice-Over Narration (Your own voice)
  5. Quality and effectiveness of photos (images from the Internet) and/or video. 
  6. Audience appropriate (the content and style relate to the target audience).
  7. Attention getting "hook" - what in your PSA gets your audience’s attention?
  8. End Credits listing your name as director and editor.  Also list the names and roles of people who contributed to your PSA.  (Note: Do not put your production company logo in this video.)
