Short Story Concept

Instructions: This is an INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT, not a group assignment. You are to brainstorm various ideas for a film of between four and five minutes.

The objective is to prepare for the next assignment, which will be a short film suitable for submission to the teen digital reel. Hopefully, you learned some lessons from last term that will lead you to improve your work this time around.

Think about stories that you can portray with the resources your have available. Do not write a bank robbery story if you do not have someone who will let you tape inside their bank. Also, don’t have a 35 year old character in your film, unless you know a 35 year old actor who will agree to appear in the project. In other words, write parts for teen actors. Avoid the depiction of violence and other inappropriate scenes for a school project.

Make sure your story has a beginning, middle and end. The structure is usually the weakest part of students films.

If you are stuck for an idea, consider telling a scary story about the paranormal. A story about ghosts, strange legends, magical powers are always entertaining.

Use Microsoft Word and write a narrative description of the story. Mention the names of the characters and the locations.

Grading Criteria

• The story is creative and entertaining
• The story has a beginning, middle and end.
• The story fits a possible finished length of between 4 and five minutes
• The story is appropriate for a class project and avoids any inappropriate or graphic scenes.
• The story has locations and characters that a high school video crew could reasonably find.
