Objective

To gain further practice following a storyboard and framing shots.  To apply rotoscoping skills used in previous exercise. 

 

Directions: 

Select a new director.  Follow the storyboard.  Capture footage and edit in iMovie.  Export each shot with a lightsaber in it by copying it and pasting it into a new project.  Export it using the following setting:

 

 

 

Procedure:

 

Shoot storyboard exactly as presented.  Remember to have actors repeat actions from one shot to the next. 

 

TIP: When shooting the duel, make sure lightsabers in the fight sequence are always in front of the actors. 

 

Import footage from SD card into iMovie. 

 

Assemble an edit of the footage in iMovie

 

Exporting an Individual clip from iMovie

 

Copy each shot individually into its own iMovie project. 

 

Then export each shot.  Go to the Share pulldown menu. 

 

Select Export using QuickTime.

Click on the Options button

Select the Settings button (see screenshot below)

Make the following adjustments to the settings (see screenshot below). 

 

Compression Type: DV/DVCPRO – NTSC

Frame Rate: Current

Compressor Quality: Best

Scan Mode: Progressive

Aspect Ratio: 16:9

Then click OK

Complete the export of this file by clicking Save.

 

IMPORTING INTO MOTION

 

Import the Shot1.mov file into Motion.

 

Launch Motion

 

Click Cancel when it asks you to Select Project Preset. 

 

Select the File  pull-down menu and select Import as Project (see screen capture below)

 

 

Rotoscope as described in previous assignment

 

Select the File pull-down menu and select Export.  (See scene capture below)

Note that each lightsaber will require its own white_square.psd.   Rotoscope and apply filters for one light saber, then start from Frame 1 and do the other. 

 

TIP:  Start from FRAME ONE in your timeline.  If the lightsaber is not lit-up yet, then move the rectangle for the lightsaber off-screen. 

 

Return to iMovie

 

Import file and replace original clip with new rotoscoped clip. 

 

Sound Effects

In Movie, add sound effects

 

Use the light saber sound effects as appropriate during ignition, clashes, etc.  Find the sound effects folder on the server. 

 

You may use the Wilhelm Scream if it works for your project

 

Music

Add appropriate music to build a sense of tension at the start and a sense of action during the fight.  Add music over the credits. 

 

Grading Criteria

 

1.      Each shot follows the storyboard

2.      FOR ACTORS: Performance has the appropriate energy for the part played.

3.      FOR DIRECTOR: Each shot is well composed, with well directed acting performances.

4.      Cuts are on action.  Continuity matches between each shot

5.      Lightsabers are properly rotoscoped with inner glow. 

6.      Appropriate lightsaber sound effects are used, including turning on sound, hum and clash sounds.

7.      Appropriate music is used to build tension and a sense of action

8.      Credits list “Edited and Rotoscoped by (your first name and last initial)”
