Television/Movies Viewing Log # 2 – Character Actors

100 Points

Directions: Keep a log of all film/video material you watch.  This includes films you see at the movie theater, rent on DVD, or any programs you watch on TV. You should also list video media you watch on the computer. For example, 20 minutes on YouTube - Various shorts). Divide the log into columns listing the date, program, hours/minutes watched and total hours per day.

Add to this the category of “Character Actor.” In this row, list the name of the character and the role they are playing. For example, “Barbara, the bossy Grandmother” A character actor is usually playing a character that doesn't go through a major change in the course of the movie. They tend to help the leading character acquire the major change that always occurs to him/her.  Sometimes, the character actor portrays the “bad guy.”

Typically, character actors lack some of the stereotypical physical attributes, or “looks” associated with stars. Many older actors and actresses find their access to lead roles limited by age. Similarly, actors from marginalized or minority groups were often barred from roles for which they were otherwise suited; some found work performing stereotypes.

During this viewing period, try to see movies and fiction on television.  You should still log non-movies, but you will not be able to list character actors for those programs.

This log is due on the next meeting date.  If you watch a news show or documentary, identify the number of principal hosts, for example a game show may have one host, while NFL Footabll by have four booth commentators.
