The Florin High English Department is dedicated to the advancement of student literacy, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and informational media literacy. Members of the department promote student reading through our outside reading requirement which gives students the opportunity to read books of their choice. Our Library Media Teacher, Mrs. Hoogland, supports this effort by stocking our library with current and engaging titles. In addition, students are taught strategies for reading expository text within our C.S.U. designed E.A.P. units which are taught at all four grade levels. Students are also given multiple opportunities to refine their writing skills in both process writing and timed writing situations. Student portfolios are passed on from year to year as a cumulative record of each student's growth. Furthermore, our English 9 and English 11 teachers give students the opportunity to prepare for and to pass the district's speech proficiency requirement. Finally, our Senior Project allows students to showcase all of their literacy skills with an assignment which highlights their expertise as readers, writers, speakers and researchers. Please contact your student’s English teacher directly for specific information or if your student is in need of additional support. English department faculty are listed below in alphabetical order. Each name also links to their email account. |
